I like the postgis question.  There isn't a built in way to do this right now.  I think for this we have to hack the plugins.  Unless Jody has some suggestions.

The mapgraphic plugin is responsible for things like the scale bar and north arrow; so if you remove it you cannot have those things (but that is your choice - glad you figured out how to get it done).
