Re: [technology-pmc] Termination candidate: Eclipse Babel

Hello Gunnar,

that is still operational? Assuming it was
https://babel.eclipse.org/ and
ran on a v-server, such server was terminated in 2024 without a
replacement. I believe the infrastructure was shut down affectively
in 2024.
Yes, from this point of view you are right: project is almost not
functional.
What we still have is
https://download.eclipse.org/technology/babel/update-site/latest/
where one can consume p2 artifacts, and because of low volatility of
mature Eclipse projects it still keeps relevance.
My point is that formal termination without wide discussion (that
will start soon on IDE WG) may have a very heavy impact, because
today a lot of contributors starting from Eclipse Platform assumes
that it is sufficient to do an externalization, and then someone
else will take care about translation, but this will not work
anymore even in theory after Babel termination.
So, despite the fact that termination decision looks reasonable here
from EDP perspective,
we must carefully consider the consequences.

However, let me point out the
difference between an
arbitrary Eclipse project and Eclipse Babel:
Eclipse Babel is more a service project since it provides
fragments with translated strings from other projects, so
its own functionality may not need any notable evolution
and this may be one of the reasons for low activity in
mailing list and other places.
Can you point to an active service the project is providing
that is still operational? Assuming it was

Please note that I do emphasize with this being a big loss.
However, a termination is not a deletion. It can be undone
when someone steps up and is willing to do the work. That
doesn't require us doing a full stop here and wait. If it's
viable it should be resumed in an active project.
