Re: [technology-pmc] Termination candidate: Eclipse Babel
|
Hello Gunnar,
All the statements you've made are convincing and of cause all these facts regarding project state cannot be
ignored.
However, let me point
out the difference between an
arbitrary Eclipse project and Eclipse Babel:
Eclipse Babel is more a service project since it provides fragments
with translated strings from other projects, so its own
functionality may not need any notable evolution and this may be one
of the reasons for low activity in mailing list and other places.
I guess most of us just don't know about the Babel data flow and how it collects data from multiple translators for these packet fragments.
Thus, we are not talking about replacing one library with another: here we are talking about shutting down the infrastructure that allows Eclipse to speak many languages around the world.

AF

I
see this a bit more pragmatic Ed.
The project hasn't had any release since 2023. The last
mailing list activity is from 2024. Thus, I think it's ok to
assume that the project is dead and termination is ok to happen.
FWIW, the source code is not killed. Its archive will remain
available. Any project willing to take this on can just import
the code. However, I don't think we need to have the overhead of
running a separate project for this. Especially when there is
evidence that no customer or consumer has been missing something
for the last two years without a release.
Also, if there is a real desire and community available the
project can be unarchived.

Yes, I've also asked the IDE WG to put this on the
agenda. We really have no information about who is
consuming this content but one can be sure that any
consumers do not read this mailing list.
I do know for a fact that there are consumers and
this will have a negative impact on them.

Hello
Technology PMC,
Hello EMO,
I have a question regarding Eclipse Babel termination:
what is the planned replacement for its localization
functionality?
A lot of Eclipse-based products around the world
consumes Babel packages with translated resources for
decades.
Termination without replacement may have notable
negative impact on Eclipse ecosystem.
Perhaps this
termination plan
should be announced
more widely
so that the
Eclipse community
has a chance
to keep this
project viable.

Dear PMC and project team,
Based on the project activity, last
commit and releases, the EMO has
identified the following project as a
candidate for termination:
We would appreciate any additional
information you can provide about the
project's status.
Otherwise we'll proceed to schedule
a termination review in the upcoming
weeks.
Kind regards,
