Re: [ide-dev] Eclipse projects on Marketplace

I rather doubt that generating MPC entries from PMI data will yield usability improvements or less effort for projects, more likely the opposite. MPC requires some rather specific data that’s not currently present in PMI. Adding the required content through PMI vs Marketplace is unlikely to be easier as PMI is already choke full of fields.

Maintaining MPC entries takes very little effort. I only touch Sapphire’s MPC entry once per release to update the repository URL and if a project maintains a /latest repository URL or something similar, even that little bit of effort isn’t required. Some projects that are tightly coupled to a particular version of Eclipse will need to do more work, but those are getting to be fewer and fewer.

If we want this to happen, how about we add MPC listing to the required items checklist for a release review? There will be some grumbling at first as projects create their entries, but as I said above, there is little to zero ongoing effort required after that.

Subject: Re: [ide-dev] Eclipse projects on Marketplace

I would love to be able to create a Marketplace of Eclipse projects.

FWIW, a number of years ago Nathan tried to automatically create Marketplace listings for MPC that was based on the release repository. Unfortunately he was not successful since he couldn't derive the correct set of feature IDs to be installed.

I think using the PMI might help but I think we will need human intervention from the projects to make this a success.

Bear in mind that there are some assumptions that we can make to make this mostly automatic, but some input and care will be required from the projects to make this work.

It should be optional and have a user-oriented focus. I expect that I'm going to be spending some time editing descriptions...

Would it be possible/difficult to have the Eclipse PMI automatically creating and synchronizing Marketplace entries for Eclipse project?
As SWTBot project lead, I would be glad if this was made updated automatically according to PMI content, and have "Eclipse Community" or "Eclipse Foundation" as owner of the entry instead of me.

Sounds like an idea well worth exploring. Please open a bug and assign it to EMO.
