Re: [eclipsecon-na-program-committee] 5's

I’ll do the same.

I’ll make some original offers and please feel free to argue otherwise. So to try out the process, let’s look at the 269 talk Ian mentioned. Marc Hoffmann has also submitted a more technical talk on EclEmma that is ranked significantly higher. I propose we select that one and not the 269.

To mark these talks that would otherwise fit our criteria, I’ve marked it with dupauth. We’ll do the same for topics that have too many sessions by marking them by duptopic. And we’ll put a comment in to say why we picked one over the other.

Also note that for whatever reason, I am not receiving notification when comments are being added. I’m not sure if you are. So if there is a change that needs to be made, please e-mail here.

Thanks,

:D

Doug, the 'in1' tag is realyl useful.   I went through each track and here are some suggestions:

Community
- 269 Let's talk about Eclipse!    I don't know the speaker but he does appear to have another talk in the tool track.  Unless he is a really great speaker, having him talk about speaking best practices might be of dubious value.  I would suggest to drop

Cool Stuff
- 116 KINECT once again with your Eclipse IDE   If I can include the KINECT demo in the award ceremony on Monday evening, I would suggest we drop.   I will try to confirm with Jonas within the week.

Eclipse Platform
- no suggestions

Tools
- 71 Eclipse Xtend - A Language Made for Java Developers.   Shouldn't this talk be in the DSL track?
- 200 and 380 both seem like Tycho use case talks.   Maybe select one?  Did anyone see Max's presentation at ECE?
- 240  Enterprise OSGi for Earthlings: Meet Eclipse Libra.   I know this one is not in but I really think OSGi tooling is important and this might be a missed opportunity.   I noticed only 4 people voted on this talk.  Can the rest of the PC take a look?
- We really need to have a BIRT session in the Tools track.  BIRT is a large successful Eclipse project that warrants representation at EclipseCon.  I realize the people on the PC might not be using BIRT but I'd ask you to please take another look at the BIRT sessions.

Mobile/Embedded
- 334 Use your phone as a remote control for your IDE.  Peter already has a talk on the accepted list.  I think having him do two talk in this track would be weak.

EclipseRT
- 284 and 161 These both appear to be p2 case studies.  I think we need to pick one.

Modeling
- I am a bit concerned we have only 4 talks selected out of the modeling track.  Sven can you please make sure we have a balance across all Eclipse modeling.  :-)

DSL
- Wow there are some great talks there  :-)

I hope this helps.

Ian

Definitely and I don’t want it to have so much weight that we trade off good talks with marginal talks.

I am putting a PC tag called ‘in1’ on all the talks that currently make the cut. You can filter on that keyword and see the list. Right this minute there are 73 based on our discussions this morning. Once we filter out duplicates and speaker overload and topic overload we may even have room to add one or two more. I’ll keep tweaking the list as we go. And we’ll bring up talks to add and remove from that list here. Please don’t add or remove the tag yourselves.

Thanks for all the hard work gang. We’re doing pretty good.

And have a great Thanksgiving to our American friends!

Doug.

fwiw, the specifically labeled the allocation 'rough' since I expected it not to be exact.

I guess in the end we can only pick 63, given the five early birds and two director picks. Also note your list has 20 for tools/other but Ian's only had 18.

Based on our review today of the available submissions, I definitely think we need to give more to Tools. I'll just throw out how I would allocate FWIW, based on the submissions we have (obviously Doug and Ian have the final say here). Basically this removes 4 from modelling, 2 from mobile, and gives 6 more to tools/other.

Modelling - 15 + 1 early bird
Platform - 9 + 1 early bird
Mobile - 8
Tools/Other - 22 + 2 early bird
RT - 9 + 1 early bird

BTW, here’s the breakdown by category of talks with > 3.5.

Modelling – 8 / 20
Platform – 8 / 10
Mobile – 3 / 10
Tools, Comm, Cool – 37 / 20
Eclipse RT – 7 / 10

Agreed, and we have already started the horse trading.

By five, I mean talks with a five vote but has been dragged down by a number of 2 and 3 votes. I’m just trying to figure out what that means. We’ll go through some examples at the meeting.

It’s easy to look yourselves. Just sort by PC Vote and see what the top 63 are. Right now there’s a big tie at 3.5. And we’re heavy in Tools and light in most of the others, which is pretty normal since Tools is a grab bag.

I’m still munching through some things to see how I want to present the list. I’ll set up a webex for the meeting and we can look together.

Last year we went through the "5's" fairly quickly. It was difficult to get the last 25% or so talks finalized... but that's always how it is. I think people should be prepared to do some horse-trading if they have some talks they really want to get in.
