Re: [eclipsecon-na-program-committee] Conference name and feedback data

Thanks, Anne, the Main Stage is what I’m thinking of as for keynote-style talks. I thought it was a great idea. Mind you, I was honored to be one of the people who presented one and I make an effort to make the talk really a keynote style talk.

I think part of the problem with timing is that people were given a choice of long talk versus short talk, and we often asked people who submitted long talks to try and fit into a short talk which usually failed miserably. One idea would be to make all talks short and then select ones we think deserve more time (good speaker, good topic) and make them long. Thoughts?

Hi all -- Sorry about the ESE 2010 program not being available online -- yet another result of that recent server failure, I believe.

The talks at ESE 2010 were 55 minutes long and 25 minutes long. The attendee survey was not conclusive -- some people liked the length, and some didn't. I know this is somewhat beyond our control, but the issue is quality. A good speaker is good at any length. So what we are trying to go is figure out a program design where the less-than-great speakers can do their best.

Here are some patterns that have emerged from previous conferences:

- 10-minute talks, aka lightning talks -- don't work

- 20 minutes is too short for most talks

- longer talks should only be given to excellent speakers

The idea of giving special billing or a longer time to some featured talks is interesting. At ECon 2009, we had a large room we labeled "Main Stage" where we put the talks we thought deserved special notice.

What was the schedule like for ESE last year. Unfortunately the program has been nuked from the system so I can’t see myself. The last one I went to 3 years ago now had 25 minute slots. What was our feedback or opinions from people who were on that length? I thought it was OK. Although I worry about the 5 minute room change.

In the past we've had short and long talks. Would it be crazy to just
let all talks be the same length? Or maybe arrange for only one of the
time slots per day be longer for keynote-style talks, maybe right
after lunch?

I like the idea of having some keynote-style talks.  There are some talks and speakers that deserve 1hr slots.  These could be right after lunch or maybe some at the end of the day.

I'm afraid (positive!) that there will be too many submissions to just have
long talks.

What happened to the 10 minutes "super-quick-intro" talks we had couple of
years ago? I actually found some value in those talks. Of course, you can't
teach technical content in 10 minutes. But I think it's good for the "elevator
pitch" type of talk when you want to introduce people to some new project
or technology.

We eliminated them last year, no? I'm not certain they served any purpose well.

We did eliminate them since attendees did not like them.   They were just too short.   I would suggest we go with a minimum time of 30 minutes slots, which means 25 minute talks since you need time to change.

What did cross my mind is that we had the product showcase last year which I thought went really well. Could we do the same for projects, i.e. a Project Showcase, where projects set up tables and people walk around to find out what's going on?

We can look at this but we might not have the space. I do believe this would not replace projects wanting to have a speaking session.
