Bill, you may also be interested in bug 238966. Though as I noted on the bug, its relevance may be on the decline with a Wave provider.

Note that not all IM providers supports this. The IM provider has to have a datashare provider implementation up and running also.

Well, with the example collab + generic server docshare should work. This was part of the work I did for bug 256980. Unless that has since been broken for some reasons. It has been a year after all.
