Hi Doug,
my experiences are different. When I asked for that
information
for the press release, I got resonse from some people that
I
had never had direct contact with
before.
What helped IMO was E-Mailing them PERSONALLLY,
with a reference to the blog.
I think that an E-Mail to the dev-list doesn't help much.
But
what we can do as mailing list admins, is get a CSV
list
of all subscribed ML members and E-mail them
directly.
We can also get a CSV list of those E-mails who
ever
submitted a bugzilla bug.
I will go forward for DSDP-TM, writing a blog (since I
need
to blog a similar topic anyways, I'll weave the survey
in),
setting up the gmail-account, and E-mailing folks
personally.
Cheers,

Hi
Martin,
Rather
than start with a blog, can we instead start on the mailing lists and
newsgroups for each of the projects? That will reach the developers who are
either lurking or participating. IMO, if a company hasn’t shown up on a
mailing list to ask questions about commercial integration challenges, it’s
unlikely that they’re going to suddenly show up because we
blogged.
Also,
I would like to get an initial list assembled as quickly as
possible.
Doug

PS
once
we have a blog for this, writing individual E-Mails
or
newsgroup entries will certainly be easier.
The
blog should include a PERSONAL E-mail
address,
allowing people to write back (and not
force
them write back to the public mailing list,
just
to ensure a bit more privacy). In the end the
study
is asking for statistics and not for company
names,
right)?
We
could probably set up a temporary gmail
address
like dsdp-survey@xxxxxxxxx which
forwards
all responses to the project leads.
How
does that sound?
Cheers,

Hi
Mark,
this
fall I've been asking community members about this kind
of
information
for a Press Release. I've simply been E-Mailing
personal
contacts, mailing list members, bugzilla commenters
as
well as blogging and asking on the newsgroup.
The
amount of feedback was quite good, I got specific
information
about
approx. ten adopters; 5 of which finally agreed to get
named
in a
press release.
Given
that information in a Press Release is even more sensitive
than
for a University Study, I'd hope that I get good feedback
with
forwarding
this request on our communication channels (mailing
list,
newsgroup, blog, personal contacts).
Since
blogs are aggregated on planeteclipse (and this is
probably
the
prime way in which they are read), I would suggest that
we
have
ONE blog asking this information for all of DSDP. Doug
would
you
like to blog this, or should I?
Cheers,

I would love to
have this kind of information. Problem is that community adopters of the
projects very rarely talk about who they work for and what they are doing.
When I've asked for Eclipse's help to determine who is downloading eRCP,
this information was generally thought to be private. So in that case, I
think divulging any info that has not been explicitly revealed by
community members might not be a good idea.

Hi
folks,
See
below. Can I get a list of commercial products / companies that use the
technology from each of the DSDP projects? This is probably good
information to gather periodically anyway, but in this case it’s for a
study.
Thanks
in advance,
Doug

Doug Subject: Project success metric
Dear Doug, I am wrting to you as a follow-up of a discussion with
Bjorn Freeman.
I am a graduate student at Carleton
University, enrolled in the Technology Innovation Management program. My
thesis is on the topic of "Open source project diversity and success" and
will be based on data from Eclipse. My supervisor is prof. Stoyan Tanev
(tanev@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, cell 613-291-3105). In my
study I need to define project success and need to ask you one question.
Please answer it at your convenience.
- Do you know how many
commercial parties have adopted the software developed within the scope of
the activities of your project, and if possible, can you list
them? Your response will be critical for the finalization of my study
as well as for its potential value for Eclipse. Thank you very much
advance. Kind regards, Heather
