Re: [oniro-pmc] Oniro Alpha Release: basic information from EF

Hi Adrian, Amit, all,
this Alpha Milestone release would effectively fall into the Exception 2 of the EDP Releases, meaning you won't have to postpone the milestone release and your original plan won't suffer any delays. It also means you don't have to engage in an official release review with the EMO at this moment.
Also, please notice the EDP clearly states that Milestone releases should be treated as "almost releases" and you are allowed to promote their download and testing amongst your early adopters, but you also need to make sure the message "these are not official releases" is clear and is passed along to your community.
We look forward to your first official release at the end of the year, and in the meantime I wish you luck with the Alpha Milestone upcoming release.
kind regards,
Maria Teresa

Hi All,

As this is an Alpha Milestone release for Oniro, would it fall into the category of Exception 2 of https://www.eclipse.org/projects/dev_process/#6_4_Releases ?
i.e. https://www.eclipse.org/projects/handbook/#release-milestones ?

All help appreciated to not slow down release development team ahead of our real full first Eclipse Foundation Release of Goofy that will be at the end of the year,

Regards,

Adrian

Hi Agustin,

As the Oniro project we've been talking about doing a milestone release to get a feel for Eclipse release processes since late last year. Since the beginning of this year and the Goofy development cycle we've consistently stated that we wanted to do an alpha release in 1st week of June.

Not once has there been any mention that a review of the EF IP policy will result in the project having to postpone the alpha milestone. This wasn't even mentioned when we met at IOTSWC, Barcelona 3 weeks ago.

So you can see why the EF proposal to postpone the Alpha release for 2 months would cause surprise.

Oniro already has a comprehensive IP compliance pipeline in place that we've asked that EF spend some time looking at. The comprehensive reports from that should, in my opinion, be sufficient for the Eclipse IP team to allow us to make an Alpha milestone release while we wait for the new EF IP policy to be ratified by the board.

We can use the new policy for the Beta milestone in late September. In any case, we were told that the entire IP review had to be finished only before the release in December and any IP review done during intermediate milestones (and where the components didn't change) would only alleviate the burden at the end of the year.

Looking forward to hear your thoughts about this. Waiting until July/August to make an Alpha release will derail our plans since several key people will also be on vacations then.

Regards,
Amit
