Hello all this is my first post in this list.
Is there anyone who has experience in deploying UDIG in a school
computer lab and using it as a tool to teach GIS. Issues of interest
to me are the following:
1. Minimum hardware specification
You can crank down the memory used by uDig to a greater degree than most
GIS applications; the minimum I have worked with has been 64megs.
Depending on what you are up to the speed may be more limited by your
network than by the local computer.
2. Improving responsiveness of UDIG
Can you be specific.
3. Use shapefiles or postgis
Um.. yes? In general shapefiles for working on your own, postgis for
working as a group. You can export from PostGIS to shapefile at any time.
4. Any other issues I should consider
You should consider exactly what you want to teach; and review the
"custom app" tutorial. A stripped down version of uDig that does exactly
what you need and no more may be the best option.
