Re: [soa-iwg] First Mockup of SOA Initiative Website

Title: Re: [soa-iwg] First Mockup of SOA Initiative Website
All,

Here is my consolidated feedback to the main page of the first mockup website:
  • Menu (top): (I repeate my point from a previous email) I suggest not to use the general Eclipse menu for the website, as this is missleading (example: “members” leads to Eclipse members, not to Eclipse SOA members). Instead I suggest to have a Eclipse SOA menu, which is in synch with the sitemap. The top menu items would be: Home, Download, Getting started, Consortium, Community, Support&Service
  • Member column (right): (a) the SAG logo is missing, (b) I suggest to a random order instead of a alphabetic order, (c) I prefer to list the member logos only without links below the logo, (d) this column needs a header “Members of this Initative” for better understanding
  • Main (left): I would change the order between “download” and “getting started”, as user must download first.

Here is my feedback to Don’s 2 points:

>I find “Consortium” to sound a bit formal and used “Participants”
Well this part of the sitemap should group 3 things: (1) Goals of the IWG, (2) Charter of the IWG, (3) List of members. “Participants” is not a good menu item name for that, but I’m open for other names.

>I had “Community” and “Support and Services” separate at first, but they seemed redundant, so I merged them under one heading.
It is not redundant. My intention was to separate the free community stuff (e.g. Webinars, forum, mailings, bug list report) from the commercial offerings (subscriptions, trainings, consulting) from the individual members. I think it is important to bring the commercial offerings into the website in order to increase the member value. The open question to me is, should we separate the free community content from the commercial offerings, or should we merge them into one menu item?

Best,
Ricco

Sorry, I should have put in the notes:

-         I find “Consortium” to sound a bit formal and used “Participants”

-         I had “Community” and “Support and Services” separate at first, but they seemed redundant, so I merged them under one heading.

Those are just suggestions, I’m happy to call it “Consortium” and happy to split out Community to a separate group.

Does anyone feel strongly either way?

I would be in favor to replace the general Eclipse website menu by a specific Eclipse SOA menu which is in line with the agreed Eclipse SOA sitemap.

Ricco

P.S: Here is the sitemap we agreed:

Home
Download
Getting started
Consortium
  • Goals of the IWG
  • Charter of the IWG
  • List of members
Community
  • Roadmap
  • Report a bug
  • Subscribe to the mailing List
  • Forum
  • Webinars
Support & Services

On the Conference call today there was concern that the menu near top of page is confusing (this is a site-wide menu), as people may think clicking the links are specific to the working group.

This menu is also on the pulsar page:
http://www.eclipse.org/pulsar/

I have to admit that I personally find it confusing, but the apparently no one from the pulsar side has had an issue reported.

Comments?

Here is a mockup of the SOA Iniative Website:

http://www.eclipse.org/org/industry-workgroups/SOA-WS-TEMP/

This is not yet linked anywhere (except this email of course), and is just a draft/placeholder.

A couple notes:
-         The getting started page is just lorem ipsum for now.

-         Download just links to main download page.

-         As is customary at Eclipse, all participants, logos, are in Alphabetical order (Steering committee first, then Member Participants).

-         Participants page is text I grabbed from membership pages.

-         The logos to the right are for steering committee participants, which are TBD, but I took a best guess for now.  The links can be driven from RSS feeds, but I’ve hard coded a couple for each just to show how it can look.

I have a couple ideas for improvement:
-         We can put a light purple background to make the page less harsh, like http://eclipse.org/membership

o  I need the eclipse soa logo files for this – Ricco, can you send them?  I need to make a transparent background.

o  I need the member logos with transparent backgrounds too.

Please let me know of any comments or ideas, again this is just a first draft with lots of placeholders and sample text/logos.
