Re: [jakarta.ee-community] Driving people to specification project lists (Re: New JakartaEE "Subscribe" mailing list stickers design)

I think it is best we step back a second from a focus on individual participation to a broader context of working together to solve problems at a macro scope. I think we all know there is a lot more to any successful initiative than writing code and merging PRs! As long as someone is trying to help in good faith, that's what really matters. As far as I can tell, that was what David was intending to say too, albeit with an understandable desire to get help with coding and PRs - which we can work towards making happen as a collective set of people that share a common interest in advancing the technology.

The GitHub profile is actually a very good indicator for how much a user was able to contribute over the past months.
And just check your own or that of others will show, that not everyone can be Arjan or Linus Torwalds, who both got a roughly similar 2k+ contribution score ;-)

David,

Even if I were not involved in PRs, we'd have something in common, but you don't see those who review or merge the PRs in the GitHub stats, don't forget that ;-)
Of course for both the Messaging spec and openmq implementation you should know who's among the top 5 contributors to both.

Adding something that breaks functionality is not a good thing for a stable specification, but whether MicroProfile could be used as such or maybe there was a true "sandbox" a bit like all the (sometimes utterly competing and redundant) new stuff in OpenJDK where you can enable them at your own risk, that could be a way to experiment and get people involved even if they may not be so prepared.
Other areas, well, you also don't see anybody except Linus Torwalds himself merging PRs into the Linux kernel.

Here's what I like about you, Werner.  I don't see a ton of PRs from you, but you're at least there and willing to participate.  In many cases you're the only one and there would be dead silence.  I respect that.

I'd happily take anyone on the spec lists.  If we can get them subscribed, we stand a better chance of pulling them in and lighting a fire under them.  If they come in for the buzzwords, I'm ok with that.

If people come in unprepared, unexperienced and unconfident, it means we've done something right.  We created an amazing community that makes them feel safe enough to say "what the heck, I'll do it" and jump in.

There are 808 people on this list.  I wonder how we can use this advantage to push people to the specifications.  Also, how can we get more participation here?

If you are one of the 800+ silent people on this list, what can we do to make it easier for you to get involved?

So a question is, how can we get people who are passionate and qualified to help some specs instead of those who subscribe to every single one just to brush up their resume with a few buzzwords?

It's also quality over quantity, you probably know the problem being in too many specs or projects, unable to equally contribute to all of them?;-/

Let's get on the topic of how to get more people onto the specification project lists.  If you have any ideas there, that'd be fabulous.

Is there something we as a community can do to drive participation?

David,

I think next time it's better to sort all of those issues and questions out in the Marketing Committee before creating false expectations and confusion in other places like this list.

Let me jump in and remind everyone this is a nascent idea, nothing is in production, printed or in any way shipped and refocus this thread.  If there are trademark violations in the proposed design, let's let the Marketing Committee deal with it.

Back on the main idea which is relevant for this list.  The overall goal is to get list participation way up on our specification projects.  We bootstrapped our lists and specification projects with a handful of people.  Some projects have taken off like Jakarta Rest which has 95 subscribers, but most are still on the 20-50 range.

So the primary motivator is getting that list participation up so we can make a big jump in the bootstrapping process and increase the health and diversity of our specification projects overall.

The basic idea:

 - Put together a simple page of all specification lists for easy subscription
 - Promote that page (a sticker is just one way)
 - Track list subscription numbers to see how we're doing and measure progress

When the sticker idea came up, conferences were still happening.  They are not now happening.  We probably need to come up with better ideas on how to get the lists page in front of people.

Is there something we can all do as a community to help drive this link in front of people?
