Re: [jakarta.ee-community] Driving people to specification project lists (Re: New JakartaEE "Subscribe" mailing list stickers design)

To offer some perspective, this is the very thing we have been working on in the Jakarta EE Ambassadors since about October/November. I'll explain a bit more below, but I am at this point honestly not concerned with getting people who can be contributors and observers. What I am concerned about is a smooth on-boarding process and setting contributors up for success. Another challenge is scaling up the leadership of the Jakarta EE Ambassadors itself. This is a problem we are working to solve as we speak and this is where folks like Werner, Ken, Ryan and many others I believe will prove to be instrumental going forward.

As surprising as it may seem, in the Jakarta EE Ambassadors we already know of 75+ people who have expressed an interest to become active contributors. Once we inevitably scale up the Jakarta EE Ambassadors leadership, we will be actively engaging this pent up pool of people we have and begin on-boarding them. My real concern is whether the current leads and committers are ready to work with this sudden influx of new people and whether the Jakarta EE Ambassadors leadership can help act as a buffer to solve the potential problem of inactive committers and leads. I am already working with the Eclipse Foundation and Jakarta EE 9 leadership to head off this problem before it arises. I would love to work on this problem with David and others as well. In my view, this is a good problem to have as long as we are listening and working together in good faith.

I hope this helps. I am happy to explain further as can Ken, Ryan, Werner and others.

Let's get on the topic of how to get more people onto the specification project lists.  If you have any ideas there, that'd be fabulous.

Is there something we as a community can do to drive participation?

David,

I think next time it's better to sort all of those issues and questions out in the Marketing Committee before creating false expectations and confusion in other places like this list.

Let me jump in and remind everyone this is a nascent idea, nothing is in production, printed or in any way shipped and refocus this thread.  If there are trademark violations in the proposed design, let's let the Marketing Committee deal with it.

Back on the main idea which is relevant for this list.  The overall goal is to get list participation way up on our specification projects.  We bootstrapped our lists and specification projects with a handful of people.  Some projects have taken off like Jakarta Rest which has 95 subscribers, but most are still on the 20-50 range.

So the primary motivator is getting that list participation up so we can make a big jump in the bootstrapping process and increase the health and diversity of our specification projects overall.

The basic idea:

 - Put together a simple page of all specification lists for easy subscription
 - Promote that page (a sticker is just one way)
 - Track list subscription numbers to see how we're doing and measure progress

When the sticker idea came up, conferences were still happening.  They are not now happening.  We probably need to come up with better ideas on how to get the lists page in front of people.

Is there something we can all do as a community to help drive this link in front of people?
