Re: [incubation] Is there any way to tell who is subscribed to our dev mailing list?

Thanks Mikael,

I’ve now updated our internal documentation to remind people that they need to be *-dev subscribers for all eclipse projects for which they have commit access, so hopefully this won’t happen to us again, but it looks like there is still a problem with auto-subscribing to mailing lists and with developer mailing list subscribers getting out of sync with the list of committers on a project.

I understand the privacy concerns, and I’ve brought up the ethics of auto subscribing people to incubation list in the past, but I think it is fine to remind people of their obligation and the consequences of not following the guidelines.

For instance rather than relying on a one-off auto-subscription to the *-dev mailing list, I think a better solution would be for there to be an automated countdown to commit access revocation. This would involve e-mails of the form “You have X weeks to subscribe to the <project>-dev mailing list, or your commit access to <project> will be revoked”. Three reminders (over three weeks) should be more than enough notice for most people.

As for people not subscribing to the incubation mailing list, a monthly reminder that “As a committer on <incubation project> you are encouraged to subscribe to the incubation mailing list” would be fine. If it were sent on the first day of the month, it would arrive alongside all of the “happy mailman day” messages. *8’)

Take care,

The Foundation does not provide the list of people who have subscribed to a mailing list because all information subscribers provide us about themselves are governed by our Privacy Policy https://www.eclipse.org/legal/privacy.php.

However, you may want to add to your "new committer guideline" that they should subscribe to your project -dev mailing list.

Cheers,

Mikael

We have just had an election for a new committer in science.scanning fail because only two active committers received the scanning-dev e-mail to announce the election. When I asked the other two active committers why they didn’t vote, they said they didn’t receive the e-mail about the election.

I have restarted the election, and forwarded copied of the announcement to the other active committers, but it would be nice to work out how to prevent this happening again in the future.

Is there any way to tell which committers are subscribed to the dev list associated with the project?

If not, is there any way for a committer to find out the e-mail addresses of other committers, so they can be prompted to check their eclipse portal and vote?

Thanks,
