We kinda already are obligated to do that due to other pressures. We make a pretty big marketing splash every year that we have these yearly releases. At least, when that stops happening, people will know, because that will be a pretty significant signal to the market.

Also, for the SR's, we don't call them that any more because they aren't service releases any more. They're minor releases. Thus Mars.1, Mars.2.

And I don't expect we'll be able to do much about the versioning of projects. That's under the control of each individual project. At least with the simultaneous release, it's under control of the Planning Council and David Williams is usually pretty good at building consensus there.

I agree that the release year is probably the simplest and most efficient name we can provide. There are a lot of existing very successful software (the main one I have in mind being Microsoft Office) that have adopted this convention and I don't think it has ever been an issue for their users or editors.

Is there a bug to track this suggestion?
