I agree with you as I here very often people asking about what's the latest release, or confused about it. Even worse, I saw people using Helios and not even wondering whether it's old or not ( https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=484765 ) .
I agree that the release year is probably the simplest and most efficient name we can provide. There are a lot of existing very successful software (the main one I have in mind being Microsoft Office) that have adopted this convention and I don't think it has ever been an issue for their users or editors.
Is there a bug to track this suggestion?
