Re: [ide-dev] FEEP update - Round 2 of funding projects coming this week

What's the scope of the "Implement Auto-Save of Editors" proposal?

Is it just the automatic backup of dirty editors, or it goes further into the "implicit-save" functionality? (as discussed in the associated bug report: https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=34076)

Hi Lars.

Great question.  Yes, we have asked for all the work to be done via a bug, and will continue to do so going forward.

I should have made clear, though, the status of the development efforts from the first round.

- the work being done by Ed via the FEEP contract is now complete. We had agreed with Ed to limit the scope of the effort to making the improvements he implemented, and agreed that making significant inroads on startup performance would require too much additional effort, and ran the risk of impacting in "unintended" ways.

- The work being done by Obeo is still in its early stages.

On an ongoing basis, we'll add ensuring the status of the bugs gets updated as part of opening and closing the FEEP development efforts.

Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,

thanks for the update. Is it possible to follow the work via a bug? Or will the result be send around via email?

For example, I have seen several patches from Ed, some are already merged, some await review and some await an update from Ed. But AFAICS I cannot see somewhere if the FEEP is finished or not.

Same for the other two points, except that I think I have not seen patches for them.

Best regards, Lars

All,

We wanted to update you on the FEEP program, our development program funded exclusively through the Friends of Eclipse program.

The first round of FEEP proposals led to 3 contracts being awarded:
  1. Implement Auto-Save of Editors ->  Obeo ($20,000)
  2. Address Outstanding Issues - Toolbar and Menu Contributions  -> Obeo ($20,000)
  3. Identify Opportunities to Improve Start-up times -> Ed Merks ($5,000)
Thank you to those of you who submitted proposals, and especially to Ed and Obeo.

Also, thanks to those who provided feedback on the process and the specific RFPs.  Based on your feedback, we are working to ensure it is easier to scope the effort of work required for each development effort.

Since the first round, the Architecture Council spent significant effort to provide a list of their priorities as recommendations for FEEP projects.  This input has been great to more clearly identify on what areas to focus, and to better clarify the desired outcomes. Many thanks to the effort to everyone who participated in making this happen!!

The next round of request for proposals will be released no later than Wednesday of this week, and will remain open for approximately 2 weeks. We hope you will consider working on these important initiatives to improve the Eclipse IDE/Platform.

Regards,
Paul White
