Re: [eclipse.org-eclipsecon-program-committee] Build and Continuous Integration Tentative Accept
|
I don't think that p2 necessarily belongs in a Build stream.
I have to admit a little concern that we are just siloing talks using
different categorizations. Sure some talks/tutorials cross boundaries,
but I still get the sense that we're staking out territories.
I don't think that we necessarily have to bump something out of "Build"
to make a p2 tutorial fit, but we may have to bump something. Perhaps
after the dust has settled and we have a sense for all the tutorials
that we need to cram into the space available, we can rank them all as a
group and decide collectively which tutorials we need to have at
EclipseCon 2010 rather than trying to decide from the comfort of our
various silos.
At the end of the day, I believe that we need to have a p2 tutorial.

Yes provisioning is important, but only a piece and a step in the
overall build story. Can you build and use plugins with out P2, sure.
If we can find the time, and somebody wants to drop another Tutorial
to make way for it then by all means. But I think technologies like
Buckminster, Buildr for OSGI, Athena, and Maven/Tycho are just as
important to the community as a whole, and cover a much wider story in
Build and Continuous Integration.
I would favor even 50 minutes 1 hour hands one sessions like Athena
had proposed, so that people can come and ask questions.
Find the time and we give equal weight to Buckminster, Athena, Tycho,
and P2/PDE then we can go from there.
As for documentation, for P2 that is a whole nother issue all
together, and honestly, should be done anyways not just for a conference.

I know I am not on the PC but I am on the list, so I feel compelled
to respond and support Chris on the importance of p2. Lots of people
still have problems using p2 and nowadays is one of the biggest rants
about Eclipse. I hope at EclipseCon was can provide some top-notch
p2 education.

Unfortunately, not a lot of slots for turorials this year, which

I think you will see some upset folks if there is no p2 tutorial at
EclipseCon. It was one of the largest underlying changes to the
Eclipse platform that we did since the move to OSGi back in 3.0...
the technology is finally coming to a point where API is being
declared in 3.6...
I personally feel a normal talk isn't enough.
