Re: [eclipse.org-eclipsecon-program-committee] A bit about the Code Camps from last year

Why not turn it into a competition?

At the beginning of the week we provide a number of problem statements and at the end of the week people can submit their plugins for it and we might hand out a price. If we make the problems big enough people will have to collaborate.

At OOPSLA we had DesignFest [1] (Remember Bjorn?). At DesignFest people got a requirements document and they had to come up with a design. If we could do such an event during tutorial time we could create designs people could work on in their spare time during the remainder of the week. DesignFest had general problems but in this case we could focus on problems that could be implemented with a few bundles. Of course the problems would have to be small enough. Would be really interesting to do this with some experienced people that know some parts of Eclipse in and out. And notice the fight between extension points and services. Could be highly educational!

Some problems:

	Quicksilver/Ubiquity functionality for Eclipse
New Online/Offline Build system for Eclipse
	Bundle Dependency Viewer
	Repository Manager
	...

I might be willing to pull that cart. However, just and idea ...

Kind regards,

	Peter Kriens

Sorry I joined the call late, but I joined around the time we were talking

The code camps were great last year if you needed a place with power, coffee
and peace :)

In my opinion, the original objective of getting people together to hack on
things didn't work out well. This was mostly, in my opinion, a lack of
organization on our part. Last year, we simply just said there was going to be a code camp and expected people to show up. This year, we should aim to
utilize the space more by:
- having some type of schedule or even a track as suggested on the call
that is staffed by people from certain projects
    - allow people giving talks to elect to use the room as a place to
further discussions after a talk is completed (this should be made well
known to presenters)

Other than that, don't remove the limitless supply of coffee :P

Thoughts?
