RE: [babel-dev] RE: how to edit in Japanese character

Hello, I am not sure how this applies to the discussion, but the coming Babel Message Editor takes care of converting extended characters to Unicode-escaped ASCII.  You can then edit in your preferred language/charset but the end result will be a portable ASCII file.  You do not have to worry about encoding issues as this conversion process is done transparently for you.

The Babel version not being ready for prime time yet, you can use the SourceForge ResourceBundle Editor to get the feel for it until it is fully ported over.

As this email has valuable technical information, I am adding babel-dev to the distribution.

Mori-san,

This is a quick summary of the translation process:
- English properties file sent out for translation (for example, files name = plugin.properties)
- Japanese translation returned in either Shift-JIS or UTF-8 (we prefer UTF-8)
- Use Java SDK's encoding utility "native2ascii.exe" to convert from Shift-JIS or UTF-8 to ASCII form of Unicode
- file renamed to plugin_ja.properties and built into NL pack

The file you were looking at was the ASCII form of Unicode in the NL pack.
If you want to look at the content of the files in the NL pack, you may use the -reverse option of "native2ascii.exe" to convert the file back to Shift-JIS or UTF-8, or use a Unicode text editor to open the file. Here is one open source Unicode text editor from SourceForge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/unired/

how to edit in Japanese charactor

Hello, Lo-san,

As preparation of translation, I am now checking and studying the property
files under Eclipse 3.2 with Japanese language pack.

I can not open (display) property files correctly as attached files.
On the other hand, xml files (like "tutrialsEx.xml") are displayed
correctly, because there is a declaration of encoding in the first line...

Can I open and edit the property files (plugin_ja.properties) with Japanese
characters?

Configuration: Windows XP Japanese version
Eclipse SDK 3.2.0
NLpack-1 3.2.1

Dear Mori-san,

I'm also very excited about NEC's participation to help globalizating
Eclipse. As we've mentioned in the conference call, we are targeting to have
the translation server ready around middle of December. Please stay tuned
for more updates in a few weeks.

Please free feel to contact me for any questions if you don't feel
comfortable posting that to the mailing list or newsgroup.

I'm located in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States.

Thnak you for your assistance

Dear Mr. Kit Lo,

I am Motoki MORI of NEC Soft. I am excited with attending such a
globalization project.

But, as you might understand in the telephone conference, I have very poor
experience about open source style development. So I worry about whether I
can go well.

According to your profile, you are an expert of software globalization. So I
am encouraged. For success of Japanese version, I would like to ask your
help when I will meet a problem.

By the way, assistance where are you in United States?
