Re: [wtp-pmc] Hotbug for review

PMC,

Here's my notes on this topic from today's meeting ... I know I may sound a little "preachy" but I do want to urge caution in having too many "fixes" that are just "allowing adopters to override" in their product customization files.

We discussed bug 249347 and agreed it was within scope of 3.0.3 (even though it is "on the edge", or in a grey area). We'll do what we can to support the effort, but must minimize any changes in behavior. Also, we'd like an improved fix in future releases so it is a more publicly visible and well documented preference, instead of a only a preference that only knowing adopters can set to override or replace WTP behavior. While we want WTP to be a platform that others can enhance we want, as a general rule, to encourage "add-on function" patterns of use, instead of "replace function" patterns of use. The former takes more work, to document, to create API, to resolve conflicts, etc., but allows all providers to contribute in the participating nature of Eclipse plugins ... instead of promoting that "the product is in charge of everything" and gives end-users the ability to control how things work and what function they use.

Subject: [wtp-pmc] Hotbug for review

Hello,

I raised a hotbug for PMC approval:
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=249347
The JEE Team decided that we need a PMC review to check if the bug fits
the 3.0.3 scope, before we continue with fixing it.

We can discuss this bug on the PMC call today.

Greetings,
