Thanks for the extra details; I think we need to handle them one at a time.

Okay so you are probably switching by right licking on the Layer and changing the layer properties. Other then that we may have to ask on the geotools list about the failures related to parsing the coordinate reference system.
The specific line that is producing the the exception seems to be in error (it is code that is trying to look and see when all the content is off screen and thus draw nothing). I am going to go start a discussion on the devel list about how to solve it.
