[udig-users] Question On Udig Desktop Datasources -- ODBC

Hi,

I’m looking for a desktop GIS engine and Udig seems to be really nice in terms of accessing webservices on the web for map servers.  However, I have local datasources, some of which are in ODBC.  I have looked through the documentation and archives and it seems that getting zip code location info and associated descriptive, dependent data, from an ODBC data source (actually SQL Server Express via JDBC-ODBC bridge for instance) can’t be done?

Is there some driver or method that would enable me to deploy my existing data to be mapped?

Do I have to export the data to a file?  Seems kind of kludgy, but I suppose I could do it.

Am I missing something?  It would seem that at least being able to do “the desktop thing” via JDBC would make a lot of sense for what seems to be the positioning of Udig?

Any suggestions are welcome, including if this question needs to be posted somewhere else.

Thank you.

John
