If there is any incompatibility between GDAL and uDig I am sure we can 
work it out. The understanding of the different "metadata" tags stored 
in a tif file (to make it a GeoTiff) is something I have seen discussed 
in the past by both groups.

I have CCed Daniele who is an expert on these matters; it is his work we 
are using on uDig trunk to work with tif files.
