I don't have an Oracle to connect to right now; but I have recently used 
the ArcSDE DataStore. The trick in both these cases is to make sure the 
jdbc drivers have been set in the Preference page (and you may need to 
restart uDig after that).

For both oracle and arcsde we cannot distribute the jars 
(congratulations you found are too most annoying cases!)

Are you doing this just using the RC14 download (ie the application), or 
are you connecting using Java code as a programmer?
