Please download and try out:

Follow the usual install process (ie download the M4 RCP zip for your 
platform).

Simple quick feedback:
a) try out shapefiles, the download includes several complete with prj files
b) try out WMS, import wizard has a list for you
c) try out WFS, import wizard has a list
