So far, only 1. has been dealt with: Bug 433411.
For 2., wiill "paho.mqtt" do?
About 3., I can do it tomorrow.
Regarding 4., I am thinking about change connect function signature to match MQTT specifications.

I am starting this right away, tell me if it does not look right to you.
