Re: [locationtech-pmc] [geowave-dev] LocationTech GeoWave Status Update

Thanks for all the additional context and feedback.
Given the information shared in this thread, I propose that we change the planned Termination Review into a Progress Review.

There is clearly continued interest in keeping GeoWave at the Eclipse Foundation, and the project remains important to downstream users. At the same time, the Progress Review would give us an opportunity to formally assess the current state of the project and agree on what needs to happen to keep it in good standing.

In particular, there are a few items that we should address as part of that process:
  • The project team needs to engage in the IP Due Diligence Process for its dependencies. There is already an open issue tracking this: https://github.com/locationtech/geowave/issues/1920. The initial analysis found almost 900 compile dependencies, with almost 200 potentially requiring review by the Eclipse IP Team, although the project team still needs to validate the dependency list and results.
  • We should confirm that there are active committers/maintainers who are willing to engage with the Foundation and take responsibility for the actions identified during the review.
  • We should also verify the project activity information shown on the PMI page, as the current activity indication may not accurately reflect recent development.
I think this gives us a reasonable path forward: rather than terminating the project now, the Progress Review can establish the project's actual status, confirm that there is a team willing to maintain it, and identify the concrete actions required for GeoWave to remain an active Eclipse Foundation project.

If there are no objections, I suggest we proceed with a Progress Review on that basis.

GeoWave continues to be a core foundational component for external open-source architectures, notably DataWave (https://github.com/NationalSecurityAgency/datawave), which relies heavily on it for geospatial indexing, query, and analytics.

Even though there hasn't been a major upstream release recently, the codebase remains integral to active downstream development and workflows. A Termination Review feels premature given how heavily it is still utilized.

I agree with Rich's assessment and would support maintaining active status rather than termination.

GeoWave has not had a significant upstream release in several years, and restarting the release process would likely require some effort. However, it remains actively used, and more specific development has continued around this generic capability. Often it's been pragmatic to develop specific operational needs rather than generalizing for the broader library, but it nevertheless demonstrates that the codebase is still relevant and continuing to evolve.

Given that, I believe a termination review may be premature. Before proceeding, could the EMO or PMC clarify whether termination would prevent the community from later maintaining and publishing GeoWave releases from another public repository, particularly given the GeoWave name and associated Eclipse Foundation IP?

If termination would create such a barrier, then maintaining the project’s active status seems appropriate.

Hello,
I just wanted to offer my two cents here.  GeoWave is actively used and is critical to operations for organizations that I support and also other organizations that I know of. I know it’s not being actively updated at the moment but from what I understand, that’s due to feature/resource prioritization as opposed to being a dead project.

I apologize; I didn't express myself clearly in my previous message.

GeoWave has been a spectacular tool, but since it appears not to have been maintained for several years, I believe it should be included in the termination review and the actions resulting from that decision—not simply deleted. The tool and the efforts of the development team deserve a round of applause and immense gratitude from the community.
