Re: [jakarta.ee-spec.committee] Mentoring specifications

I'm sure it is new for you and a few other new members of the Spec Committee.  Even those that lived through it the first time have to revisit the Ops Guide and other docs as reminders (myself included).  Thanks for asking the questions!  And, thanks for helping out with the reviewing!

Hi Kevin,

Thank you for the prompt response, and I apologise if I ask some trivial questions ‐ I’m new to the process!

Thank you for the link, I’ll give that a read. I assumed the PR was to be merged prior to the ballot, but that makes more sense. I’ll start pushing for the other steps on the checklist.

Best regards,

Matt

Hi Matt,
Right.  The TCK has to be final as well as the ballot completing successfully.  There is more information on the process in Ops Guide, under Creating a Final Specification:

https://jakarta.ee/committees/specification/operations/

We have a few Project components that are dependent on the Platform TCK and and the Platform CI (ie. Glassfish) in order to be "final" and ready for ballot.  For example, in Jakarta EE 8, the following Specification PRs were labeled as "Platform" -- Platform, Web Profile, Managed Beans, Enterprise WS, Interceptors, Enterprise Beans, and Management (not part of Jakarta EE 9).

Hi Kevin,

Just wanted to add a further question. Am I right in saying that in regards to https://github.com/jakartaee/specifications/pull/225(The EL 4.0.0 PR), it can’t be merged of approved until the TCK is final?

Best regards,

Matt

Kenji,
You should reference the Platform TCK, both from a staging and final version perspective.  You could also add text to the checklist entry to indicate that you are dependent on the Platform TCK.

Let me make sure about TCK and certification request portions of the checklist.

If the specification has no standalone TCK and uses Platform TCK, what should we check ?

Or can we leave them as uncheck status ?

[jakarta.ee-spec.committee] Mentoring specifications

Esteemed specification committee members,

The ballots for the first wave of specifications are scheduled to start on Monday 20th. You are probably all well underway reviewing the PRs for specifications to which you were assigned as a mentor. I have compiled a short checklist for what needs to be done.

If a PR has been created for the specification

  1. Assign yourself as a reviewer
  2. Add a comment to the PR containing the checklist [1], like Kevin has done for [2]
  3. Start reviewing
  4. [optional] Join the mailing list for the project producing the specification
  5. [optional] It may be a nice gesture to send an email to the project mailing list explaining what you are doing. An example here [5]
If a PR has NOT yet been created for the specification
  1. Check which wave it is in [3]
  2. Check when the due date for the ballot start for that wave [4]
  3. Join the mailing list for the project producing the specification
  4. Send an email explaining your role as a mentor and ask if they are on track to make the due date for producing the PR
  5. Follow up until a PR has been created, then start reviewing
