Re: [ee4j-community] Help Pick the New Name for Java EE

Ian

That's actually the proposed way of naming projects given in the Eclipse Project Naming Policy:
One long name that can be used on things like diagrams, and one short name (or an acronym, or a fancy codename) to be used as needed.

E.g.: "Eclipse Insert-Your-Brand-Here Framework", which can just be called "Insert-Your-Brand-Here" for brevity. Then, a short name for common use, which could be something like "Your-Brand" for a short version of the full name, IYBH for an acronym, or something like "Sparkplug" for a codename

I just make a comment on the github issue about first identifying what are the core value for the community.  Based on these core value, it would be nice to see the name reflect these value.

As a starting point, here are some of the core values I see for the EE4J community moving forward:
- Openness, vendor neutral, Cloud Native, lightweight, agility, micro-services.

However, the existing community seems to be focused on enterprise ready, production, quality, etc.

For example, something like Open Micro-services for Java (OpenMSJ).

In my mind, you want to think about a long name and a short name.  The short name needs to be four syllable or less.

+1. The list is full of names starting with Java which are already out. But there are also names that *contain* the Java word, which use is a bit unclear.

Some hint on that would be useful.

Is there any way we could have a constructive conversation here to clarify the ins and outs of this brand-to-be?

While the GitHub Issue is quickly getting swamped in posts (which is good), it seems as if most people is just ignoring anything posted before they add their own nomination to the brand name.

The main problem I'm seeing (and please, correct me if I'm wrong at any point) is that most of the names being proposed either violate the Oracle Trademark Usage Guidelines, completely ignore the Eclipse Project Naming Policy, or are targeted to the wrong components (Umbrella Project, Implementations, etc) instead of the one we're actually trying to brand here (Specifications Umbrella).

If we could, at least, collect a comprehensive list of what IS and ISN'T valid here, we might be able to come up with a batch of good names to propose, without nominating something good that will later be removed because it goes against one of the guidelines involved

We need a new brand name for the set of specifications that will be created by the new community process. This brand name will also become a certification mark in the industry for compatible, independent implementations. The open source projects that fall under the Eclipse EE4J top level project will be one such implementation. In short, we need a new name to replace “Java EE”. Much like the OpenJDK project implements the Java SE Platform specification, the EE4J projects will provide implementations of a set of specifications that we today call Java EE: we need a brand name for this set of specifications.

With this in mind, we are initiating a community process to select the brand name. This process will be managed by the EE4J Project Management Committee (“PMC”) with assistance from the Eclipse Management Organization (“EMO”). The name that is selected by this process must pass legal and other trademark searches to ensure that the names are available for use. As a result, it is possible that the favoured selection will not be the ultimate choice. The final decision will be made by the EMO Executive Director (“EMO(ED)”) in consultation with the PMC.

There is more detail, and a means of nominating your choice here:
