Looking at last year’s submission graph you can see that the
last Monday were the big weeks:

My gut reaction is that not only will most of the submissions
continue to come in on the last day, but most of our review will work will happen
as the deadline for our work approaches. So if adding another deadline gets
more early submissions, buzz, and review of the submissions, I am all for it.
My opinion is that if you want to really get people to submit
early you should sweeten the pot a bit. How about the five featured talks get
two free passes plus the extra schwag?

EclipseCon Submissions Promotions
I agree it’s tight, but people seem to act better with deadlines
(hence, let’s have 2 J). If we start promoting this tomorrow AM, then it’s
9 full days spanning a weekend for the short deadline – I think that’s pretty
reasonable…
BTW - I just checked with Gabe and we don’t track the
submission date, but he’s going to try to get a better picture another way
(stay tuned). Anecdotally, more than half the submissions come in the
last day, and a much larger % come in the last week.
It’s always that final week drum-beat that gets the submissions
in, hence the idea noted below.

My (quick)
opinion is this would have been a great idea if executed earlier. But, as it is
... just a weeks notice seems a little short (almost unfair), and the deadline
is only a week earlier.
But I'm not
opposed if others think it worth while. Definitely good idea for next year.
Thanks.

PC,
Sorry for the
urgency, hoping to have this debated with the group today so that we can go an
implement ASAP if there is consensus.
What would
you think about having a promotion for EclipseCon submissions that goes like
this:
-
Submit a talk by December 10th to be
eligible.
-
The program committee will pick 5 great talks from
those submitted by December 10th , (we’ll do this via email on the
11th and over the weekend if necessary)
-
We will announce those 5 great talks on December 14th
-
A speaker from each of the chosen talks will get a
cool piece of schwag – i.e., a polo shirt, sweater or the like.
I don’t think
we’d call this a contest – just a way to encourage earlier submissions, and to
show off how good the content is going to be (i.e., try to raise the bar for
the hockey stick submitters)
