David,
Last year many of the two hour presentations ended up being really long
talks with no hands on (boring). The problem is that two hours is not
enough time to really get everyone setup to do hands on, provide
instruction, and do exercises.
If you combine two talks, rather than think of it as two - two hour
sessions, I would prefer the submitters integrate their work so that it
is a cohesive walk through with logical hand off points and a common
story. The goal would be to coordinate the exercises so that the four
hours has a good flow from one subject to the next with a minimum
amount of time messing around setting up the environment.
Not know which talks you are looking at, I don't know if this is
possible. Given your description it does not sound like it is possible.

Was there a conclusion about 2-hr tutorials? Can we have 2, 2 hr.
tutorials that are not literally merged into one?
I have 2 submitted that I thing would be suitable (and better) as 2 hours,
but they can't be meaningfully merged (different topics, one's beginner,
one advanced, etc. Am I safe to ask the authors? (via comments, I got that
conclusion :)
