Re: [eclipse.org-eclipsecon-program-committee] how to handle13proposals on a 4 slot allocation ?..

I did a first pass on the Java track, and noticed quite a few submissions
mislocated. I would appreciate some insights (see WRONG TRACK below) to
make further progress.
ACCEPT (TENTATIVELY)
http://eclipsezilla.eclipsecon.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3727 Java 7 Language
Features Alex Buckley
--> strong accept. words directly from the java language team from Sun
http://eclipsezilla.eclipsecon.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3786 Unleash the
Power of Refactorings in your Products! Tobias Widmer
--> accept. first talk ever from the JDT refactoring folks.
http://eclipsezilla.eclipsecon.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3768 Apache Harmony:
Developing the Java platform with Eclipse Tim Ellison
--> weak accept. I know them to be fairly creative in their approach on
modularity. It could go in the OSGi track. Jeff ?
DUNNO YET, likely one story from the trenches would be nice.

REJECT (TENTATIVELY)

--> reject ? redundant with a short tutorial (from same author), and given
we have too many submissions
http://eclipsezilla.eclipsecon.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3788 Introduction to

--> reject ? should rather be considered as a short talk, and btw not Java
specific, proposal for short talk is already there 3790

Good point, thanks Jeff.
No reallocations have been made yet, and we have until the 30th to decide,
so I agree we should all take a look at the bigger picture before
proceeding. Of course, there are 200+ Long Talks to review, and it took me
longer than I thought it would to go through them all. I’ll record votes
my votes in all tracks, but will seem odd in the case of the Web track,
where submissions are already being accepted.
Hopefully, more of the PC can find the time to vote across tracks before we
accept submissions, and then decide on reallocations.
Best,
Rich

FWIW, I think it is premature to reallocate slots. Rather I suggest
that the various tracks prune assuming they are not getting any more
slots and then collectively we look at the allocations and decide how
to be shuffle. Note also that in some cases it would be reasonable
to move talks between tracks to get better balance etc. There is a
bit of a challenge due to the acceptance timing and the Christmas
holidays but the sense I have from the tracks in which I am involved
is that the community has not really been looking and the PC members
have not been casting votes around. As a result it is hard to get a
bigger picture.
As I have said before, it is very encouraging that so many sessions
are over subscribed with proposals but the PC should focus on the the
over all conference package as seen by the attendees and the
community.

I’ve looked at the overall numbers for Long Talks and Panels and have
the following summary with suggestions (allocations/submissions):
Track Long Talk Panel Comment
Business 4/15 1/0 Convert panel to talk, or donate?
C++ 2/5 1/0 Convert panel to talk, or donate?
Data 3/3 1/1
Fundamentals 4/14 0/1
Industry 2/3 1/1
Java 4/12 2/1 Recipient of extra/donated slot(s)?
Mashup 2/10 1/1
Mobile 5/11 1/1
OSGi 2/15 1/1 Recipient of extra/donated slot(s)?
Reporting 5/10 1/0 Convert panel to talk, or donate?
RCP 4/20 1/0 Convert panel to talk, or donate?
SOA 2/5 1/1
Technology 6/25 1/3 Recipient of donated slot(s)?
Test 4/12 1/0 Convert panel to talk, or donate?
Tools 4/7 1/0 Convert panel to talk, or donate?
Web 5/17 1/2 Recipient of extra/donated slot?
We have 3 extra Long Talk slots, which I propose are distributed as
indicated above. Otherwise, I believe we can do some adjustments
among the tracks to better distribute slots where needed, based on
need and interest.
Please reply with your changes, donations, or other ideas on how we
can create a balanced program.
Thanks,
Rich

I suspect we will rule out talks with commercial content as a first
cut, though I have not discussed that with my PMC yet. Beyond that,
we will look for a balance of broad vs narrow, tools vs frameworks,
and current vs new technology.
The only other option might be including an additional room/track to
increase the number of slots available.

If it's any consolation, I have 15 business submissions for 4 slots,
most of which are quite excellent. I would advise trying hard to get
the community to help you choose.

13proposals on a 4 slot allocation ?..
Folks,
For the Test&Perf long talk track we have 13 proposals and only 4
slots allocated.
The plan is to group all proposals in such a way that there will be
one proposal for the following topics : Test. Trace, Code Analysis,
Monitoring
This simple plan seems to be very hard to execute. It is almost
impossible to squeeze 13 proposals under 4, especially since the
presenters represent different groups. I did an initial attempt to
reduce the number by adding a comment on the eclipsezilla track with
the regrouping proposal. The result is an overflowing set of notes I
am receiving from the presenters which clearly are not too happy with
the proposal
Does anybody have a similar experience and a better approach that can
be shared?
Is any other track having unused sits that can be donated to the
Test&Perf section ?
Thank you,
