Re: [eclipse.org-eclipsecon-program-committee] Potential Business Track Topics

Hi Ian,

Nice list. Here are some comments.

- Stephen O’Grady on Conversation Marketing  (similar to what he did in Chicago)
I didn't hear Stephen in Chicago but if you already know that this is a good talk I'd give it a +1.

- Kathy Sierra on Creating Passionate Users   ( a popular blog)
Creating passionate users can be an interesting topic depending on where Kathy takes the talk. Do you have more information about the key points you'd expect in this talk?

- Evans Data to present on some recent market research studies
Trends they are seeing with development in general or Eclipse based trends? I'd like to see trends in the industry and where Eclipse fits in to the picture. Do you think this is a long or a short talk?

- Cliff Schmidt to discuss the pros and cons of different open source licenses
+1. OS licenses continue to be confusing for developers and organizations. I attended the Free Software and Open Source Symposium at York University last week. The morning keynote was given by a lawyer from Canada's information commons and was well attended and well listened to (for lack of a better term). Many quality questions followed the presentation.

- I was thinking of doing a session on marketing open source projects
As the WTP ecosystem lead I'd like to hear this. How much do you think this would overlap with Stephen's talk? Who is the target audience? Eclipse projects? (We really rely on you.) Are there many other open source project leads in attendance at EclipseCon who you think would attend this talk?

- Panel discussion on RIA and RCP applications   (probably also a user track
session)
Do you have any panellists in mind?

- Panel discussion of Strategic members on there experiences of joining the
Eclipse community
What sort of information do you expect to hear in this panel and who is the target audience? Is this going to end up being a panel of strategic members sharing war stories of joining Eclipse or singing Eclipse's praise?

[eclipse.org-eclipsecon-program-committee] Potential Business Track        Topics

At the last EclipseCon Program Committee, I volunteered to send out a list
of potential business track sessions and then follow-up with recruiting the
speakers for these sessions.   Below is a first draft of the list.   I’d
appreciate everyone’s comments and feedback.   Based on the feedback, I will
start recruiting the speakers later this week.

Thanks
Ian

- Carl Zetie from Forrester research on Eclipse and the Long Tail

Carl has done extensive research on how Eclipse is being adopted in the
enterprise.  He is also looking at the concept that Eclipse enables
small/niche oriented ISVs to develop specialize products, hence the Long
Tail.

- Stephen O’Grady on Conversation Marketing  (similar to what he did in
Chicago)

Stephen did a very successful presentation at the recent Eclipse members
meeting on marketing to developers.   I think it would be worthwhile
repeating at EclipseCon.

- Kathy Sierra on Creating Passionate Users   ( a popular blog)

This lady has a popular blog titled ‘Creating Passionate Users’.  I think it
would be applicable for project leaders and ISVs looking to develop their
own user community.

- Evans Data to present on some recent market research studies

Evans Data does a lot of market research of the developer community.  It
would be interesting for them to come and talk about the trends they are
seeing.

- Cliff Schmidt to discuss the pros and cons of different open source
licenses

Cliff is the VP of legal affairs at Apache Software Foundation and an
Eclipse Technology PMC member.

- I was thinking of doing a session on marketing open source projects

I'd be happy to do a session on my experiences of marketing in the Eclipse
community.

- Panel discussion on RIA and RCP applications   (probably also a user track
session)

I think it would be interesting to have a panel discussion that explores the
different models of building RIA and/or RCP applications.

- Panel discussion deploying Eclipse in the enterprise

Attemept to have a number of people with experience deploying Eclipse within
an enterprise.

- Panel discussion of Strategic members on there experiences of joining the
Eclipse community

Invite representatives from the companies that joined as Strategic Members
during last years EclipseCon (BEA, Borland, Sybase, CA and Scapa) to discuss
their experiences over the pass year.
