Re: [ecf-dev] Can I know reason for Not selecting me?

Hi Sreyansh,

Hi all,
My application was not selected for the GSoC. I want to know the
reason for it so that next time I can definitely improve upon it.
*One reason* I feel is: I applied for the project idea which was given
by a Person. But then he too applied as a Student. So it was clearly
evident that His application had to be accepted.
It was not so much that his application *had* to be accepted, but rather
that he did identify the idea, and articulate it publicly in the
proposal...which was clearly in his favor among the evaluators (of which
I was only one of several).
I missed it.
I still feel that I could have been given a chance of good learning
than the one chosen who already knows everything.
Of course. The entire gsoc is intended (and in my mind realized) as an
educational exercise...for the students, but also for the mentors and
the project teams. And we want as many people to participate as we
can...but Google does put a limit on the number of applications that can
be accepted (and of course we are limited in resources to address the
mentoring needs).
GSoC is after all
bringing together students for learning and help Open Source
Organization, rather than just helping the organization for their
commercial success.
Yes...as lead for ECF project for the past ~5 years, I know this to be
correct/true. This *is* about helping the project (and the students),
rather than addressing commercial needs directly. I think I can safely
say that ECF is *not* run by any commercial organization (my own
employer included), but is, rather, community-driven. To me the
community includes students, commercial developers, people who do
development for enjoyment, ISVs, other open source projects (both inside
the EF and outside), and others. And just to be clear...I know of *no*
commercial interest (including EclipseSource) in REST for ECF at this
point, although based upon community interest I think it could/will be a
very useful direction for the project, both commercially and otherwise.
So Sreyansh...even though your project was not selected for Google
Summer of Code (along with a number of other very fine project
proposals), you are, of course, welcome to participate in the community
as a contributor to ECF. Actually not just welcome, but encouraged.
Please consider doing so. GSOC is but one way to be a contributor to
ECF, and *all* contributors/contributions are very much appreciated by
me and the other committers.
Also, if you would like to correspond or speak to me privately please
let me know.
Thanks,
Scott
