As a follow-up, what would a GPS-enabled application *do*, from your point of view?

I'm interested in using GPS for natural resource mapping. ie mark out a section of vegetation/soil type using a series of waypoints and then import them into udig. Then "join the dots" to create a polygon of interest.

It would also be useful to resolve conflicts between different datasets.

Specifically I'm a member of a local group interested in rehabilitating an area of land which has been filled with industrial waste over the last couple of decades, but contains areas of remnant sand dunes which have been crudely identified from historical maps dating from ~1880. The idea is define these areas more precisely to gain a better understanding of the ecology of the area.
