I would guess that this was acceptable and could be optimized if really
needed.

Yes, absolutely.

I suppose that micro-ecc in 8bit mode (if such a thing exists) will
still be faster than the old implementation in 16 bit mode, no? (I may
have a 16 bit MCU here so I could check if need be.)
