A big part of process education is better process tools. You can do write-ups until you are blue in the face and people will still not read them. I see this all the time and not just here. Thanks, - Konstantin From: Eric Rizzo Sent: Friday, June 10, 2016 10:48 AM To: Technology PMC Subject: Re: [technology-pmc] Vote for Committer status for Jonah Graham wasstarted by Erwin De Ley That bug, and the ones that it links to, are good but I think we also need to address a more fundamental root cause. It should not surprise a project lead that he needs to provide evidence of merit; it should be part of what he is educated about in the process of becoming a committer and project lead. I'll be honest: it absolutely shocks me that we have people in the position of project leadership who do not fundamentally understand this. *That* is what I consider more important than making the system prompt and/or enforce; if we solve the root problem, those other things are just convenient reminders.
Like many problems in software development, it seems like it's really a communication problem.

Guys, I totally agree. Unfortunately Erwin didn't reach out to the other committers before nominating Jonah, so I didn't get to tell him about the meritocratic requirement. This wouldn't be a problem if it was on the form, I think. Jay I need to check, but I recall filing an issue awhile ago about having the committer nomination form require listing issues and git commits as contributions (as part of the nomination process). Seems like a very small change to make. PMC members, I know I've raised concern about this before, but here is another committer nomination that demonstrates fundamental misunderstanding of the process and its meritocratic nature. Even worse, there is a +1 vote from another committer with the comment "I don't know who this person is." (!). To me, that's a big warning sign that the project members have not been well-informed about how things are supposed to work. Here's the thing, the project mentors are Wayne and Jonas, both of whom I have faith are good at being mentors, among the best. So where is the process failing these new projects and their leaders? It happens often enough that I think there is a gap somewhere; I'm just not experienced in the new project on-boarding process to know where that gap might be.
Yes, I know it's easy to educate them at this point - but I'm trying to figure out how we can prevent these kinds of nominations, not just put out the fires as they flare up.
Eric technology.triquetrum Committers, This automatically generated message signals that Erwin De Ley has nominated Jonah Graham as a Committer on the technology.triquetrum project. The reason given is as follows:
Jonah has deep expertise on integrating python in java & rcp, and on eclipse software dvp for science.
He will be valuable for the line of work in Triquetrum related to connectors to other languages, and other science-related extensions.
thanks erwin
The vote is being held via the MyFoundation portal: voters *must* use the portal for the votes to be properly recorded. The voting will continue until either all 5 existing Committers have voted or until they have been given enough time to vote, even if they do not do so (defined as at least one week). Jonah Graham must receive at least three +1s and no -1s for a successful election.
Eligible Committers must cast their votes through their My Foundation portal page (do NOT just reply to this email; your vote will not be correctly recorded unless you use the portal):
http://portal.eclipse.org/
The project Committers eligible to vote are:
Jay Billings Christopher Brooks Erwin De Ley Matthew Gerring Alex McCaskey
*NOTE*: Successful elections are left open for a maximum of 120 days to allow for processing of paperwork. After that time the election will be expired, regardless of its current status. Should papework processing on the part of the candidate take more time than allowed, a new election will have to be held.
