Actually, along the line of your suggestions I think the situation can be described as:
- most of the cars need to change their destination and the drivers know this in advance.

Any pointers where to start building such a project would be welcome for a newbie :-).

- the original destination (i.e. the parking area for the venua is still accessible but access is via fewer roads, thus potentially creating congestion) 
- some of the cars need to change their destination (instead of parking in the restricted zone they need to park elsewhere)
  - some drivers may be aware of this in advance and target the alternative location directly
  - some drivers only react once they reach the restricted zone and thus take longer to find an alternative parking spot

The degree to which simulation results are predictive of actual traffic conditions depends largely on the accuracy of the network and traffic demand models.
Expect some manual work to fine tune the OSM derived network and make sure you have access to traffic data sources for calibrating the traffic demand.

I would like to see how traffic distributes in the surrounding areas

The simulation would be performed on a real urban area with a diameter

I would need to start with SUMO from scratch, so before starting a
surely time-consuming project I would prefer to be sure that the tool is
well suited for this need, and that the result can actually be meaningful.
