A quick follow-up question: enabling "scale length with geometry" seems to work, but there are sections in my network where cars look very small and sections where cars look normal. Is there a way to solve the edge length mismatch so that cars appear to be the same throughout the network?

if you can rule out vehicle visualisation (vehicle scale should be 1), then another reason can be an (apparently unvoluntary) edge length-geometry mismatch. Usually the vehicle lengths are scaled to maintain the relative size with respect to the edge but that can be disabled. You can read more about that in the documentation.
