  • Thread-topic: Request for guidance on integrating RTSIM into SUMO

Dear SUMO developers,

My name is Aadya Bhattarai. I developed a research framework for studying how vehicle automation, platooning aerodynamics, and road conditions influence fuel consumption and emissions for military applications.

A key motivation for this work came from the platooning simulation studies I reviewed. Their fuel-consumption benefits were attributed to automation and driving behavior, without explicitly accounting for aerodynamic drag reduction within the platoon. I believe aerodynamic effects can contribute significantly to platooning fuel savings and should be considered alongside automation.

The work combines SUMO traffic simulation with Plexe platooning control, CFD-derived aerodynamic drag coefficients and PHEMlight vehicle data. It supports both car-following and platooning, with different driving-behavior profiles for individual vehicles and drag coefficients based on their declared platoon positions and nominal gaps.

I would like to make this functionality available directly within SUMO. I have implemented an optional native rtsim vehicle device that supports:
  • Per-vehicle automation-level presets using sigma and controller-appropriate headway settings, with independent model selection.
  • Integration with Krauss and selected native Plexe ACC/CACC controllers.
  • Fixed drag coefficients or CFD-table-based coefficients.
  • Vehicle-specific aerodynamic drag and road-surface rolling-resistance inputs for PHEMlight fuel and emission calculations.

The implementation and guide are available in my fork:

I have signed the Eclipse Contributor Agreement. If you think this functionality would be useful and suitable for inclusion in SUMO, would the current approach work, or would you recommend a different approach? I would appreciate your guidance on how to proceed with the contribution.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Regards,

Aadya Bhattarai
