[stellation-res] Using IRC from Windows

IRC on Windows is not hard.
Yesterday was my first time on IRC, and I set it up first on
Windows (where I tend to do mail and SameTime) and then migrated
to xchat on Linux.

For Windows:

1. Get an IRC client. I downloaded mIRC from www.mirc.com; it's
shareware ($20). There are probably free clients too, but I often
buy shareware (if I actually use it) for this kind of thing.

Installation was a click-and-go deal.

2. Enter basic personal info (name, nickname, email) and tell mIRC
which server to use. For Freenode, use "irc.freenode.net".

Note: I chose to run mIRC in 'invisible' mode, which means my name etc.
didn't show up in any public "who's online" lists etc.

3. Once connected to Freenode, select the "#stellation" channel.
This doesn't appear in the public channels list for good reason;
just type the channel name into the appropriate field (instead of
using the picklist).

A chat window should then open, with a members list on the side.

You'll probably want to turn on logging (to keep a transcript);
you can also save the buffer (window) contents to disk at any point,
or use cut/paste etc. I also find it useful to colorcode my
text, to make the chat more readable (well, depends on colors :(

For Linux - xchat is part of the distro, and the UI is more-or-less
like mIRC.

Regards,

Jim

I have absolutely no experience with IRC and have no idea how to set this up
under Windows so I will stick to the list for the time being.
