I have also read that there is still a law on the books, in NYC, making it
illegal to carry beer on the street **in an open pail**.  Reportedly, it dates
from the time of horse-drawn carriages (still available near Central Park, 
actually).
It may be urban myth; I hope not.  One can only imagine the, ah, stimulus for
original passage of the law (and recall Lee Marvin (?) and the drunken
horse in the movie Cat Ballou, many years ago..... I think he got a 
supporting-actor
Oscar for that role; I always thought the horse deserved equal credit...)
