Even though it's hard to code against an API in which constructors
and methods (connectToDatabase, for example) modify their arguments,
I realized I was wrong to check in some changes to repos/database
on 2002-12-12, as I shouldn't have modified the API. I have just put back
the code the way it was.

I made some progress with firebird in the last few hours at work, 
but still not enough to merit a check in. I'll try again tomorrow.
