You seem to have problems with Firebird too.

What's the content of your /etc/host.equiv file?

Mine is:
    localhost.localdomain
    tweety.maxprograms.com

At /etc/hosts I have the following line:

127.0.0.1  tweety.maxprograms.com tweety localhost.localdomain localhost
    
This should be enough to find localhost.
