Re: [starter-dev] A question about usability

Alex,

It might be a good idea to review this: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bthiYVjX_UK7Xp2qQmq93awPwVhVCDnprGdzeMtv_ow/edit? It basically summarizes all the decisions and input from committers, stakeholders, and likely key contributors.

Basically, your perspective very much aligns with the general consensus. That’s of course not too surprising as we indeed want to remain competitive if not slightly ahead since we have the benefit of looking at what came before us.

I am pretty confident we can get to a pretty competitive state with just 2.0. I think 2.0 could happen as early as February. Of course you don’t have to just stand by. Initially I, Jeyvison and Bazlur will need to do some heavy lifting to get us to a stable, consistent state. Then I think pretty much everyone here should be able to contribute in some way or the other (certainly I intend to ask for specific contributions). I would advise keeping an eye on the code flow in the next few weeks and maybe even help review PRs? It’ll help if folks are already acclimated to the code (which necessarily will have a reasonable learning curve given our scope but honestly I don’t think it’s too much for most enterprise developers).

Does that help?

Cheers,
Reza

Subject: [starter-dev] A question about usability

Hi, Alex,

I've changed the subject of this email so that it doesn't interfere with the voting thread.

The concerns you raised are already being addressed with these github issues:
Both are basically implemented already, just some review is needed before deploying a new version at start.jakarta.ee.

Reza,

since I am new to the project and haven’t followed the previous discussion about archetype, I like to sort out one question for myself:

Will the final starter only provide a maven command to use the archetype and thereby create the project structure (which I think is generally a good idea, as you can use it without UI) or will there be additionally the possibility to get it as a downloadable zip file?

I think the archetype should be fine for any experienced developer, but people new to the business might be bothered by the additional step (first install maven, then copy the command from UI, then get the project structure), especially since all other starters out there, especially from the probably most competitive Spring community, work like that and which they see and evaluate in comparison.

Alex
