Would it hurt to have it? I think that while it may often be un-necessary, but it doesn't make it harmful to have it all the time instead of only under circumstances.
I think it would bring some consistency in behavior too (by consistent, I mean that the behavior is not conditional), and consistent behavior is often perceived as a simplification by users

in the status line if that's really giving you any additional value.
I'd find it simpler to have the full path as a decoration on the item (as it is in case multiple files have same name) than to have such status line. The eye-distance is small and it makes the scope of the patch really clear that it is the scope of the item.
For those reasons, I believe that getting rid of the status line and showing the path on all items would actually be a good UX simplification and improvement.
