Andrew,
VerifyError sounds suspiciously like you're hitting a VM bug. Some things
you might try:
- run the same bytes code on a different OS to see if the bytecodes fail to
verify there too
- try disabling the JIT

I've managed to build Eclipse on the above platform, but when I run the
eclipse binary I get a "problem during startup" dialog and the following
message in the ./workspace/.metadata/.log:
