Re: [paho-dev] Status of MQTT-S spec

This had been raised repeatedly.

Scott has previously had an action from the Paho calls to get this clarified, as Nick says this has never been resolved.

Most recently I asked about it in person at the f2f meeting in Boston.

Currently no Paho components implement MQTT-S but we've been talking about widening the scope of the protocols supported so it does seem like a natural fit. More importantly though, we would need an MQTT broker and a gateway, not just a client.

Note that MQTT-S is not to my knowledge part of OASIS' remit around MQTT either.

Hmmm. That is unfortunate. Did someone lose the source code to the PDF file for the MQTT-S spec? (sort of joking)

Is Paho implementing MQTT-S? Because if it is, this situation does require some immediate attention.

Hi Mike,

the intention is for MQTT-S to be available under exactly the same terms as MQTT. The fact the document doesn't contain the appropriate text is, as you say, an oversight.

This gets raised with some regularity, but it hasn't been resolved yet.

Someone was asking about the MQTT-S specification, and I noticed that its licensing seems to be unclear.

[1] says “Like MQTT, the detailed specification of MQTT-S is open and available at mqtt.org

But the spec document[2] on mqtt.org simply says “© Copyright IBM Corporation 2008, 2011. All rights reserved.”  I’ve looked through that document as carefully as I can, and I do not see any license grant similar to what is in the MQTT spec[3].

Can anyone clarify for me what the status is on the ability on anyone other than IBM to implement MQTT-S? Is this some oversight that can be easily fixed?

Thanks.
