I think the C client has pretty much the same functionality as the Java 
client.  As for the specific item about exposing the message id, we use 
message id as the token returned from a publish.  It didn't seem a good 
idea not to let the application be able to retrieve the message id, to 
me.  At most the doc could be updated to make this clear.
